INTRODUCTION OF FOOD SAFE SHELLAC
Food grade shellac is safe when taken by mouth. Though few people are allergic to shellac, yet the shellac used to glaze food items and pharmaceutical products is considered food safe.
One should not confuse between the shellac used in pharmaceutical and dental manufacturing, and hardware store’s varnish like products. The varnish like shellac is extremely poisonous as it contains wood alcohol or methanol. Varnish is not meant to be eaten. So, if you ingest a few amounts from the minced food that is overlaid with food grade shellac, you may end up eating some amount of the stationary material. You can consider it unappetizing. But, food grade shellac is ediblefrom the standpoint of food safety. Therefore, we can name it as food safe shellac.
Shellac is widely used for kid’s furniture and toys. The shellac solids are composed of a discharge from the lac bug found in Asia. Hence, it is quite natural. The solvent for shellac is the denatured alcohol. If you drink it, it can kill or harm you critically. The solvent evaporates leaving the shellac. 200 proof grain alcohol from the liquor shop can be used to combine pure shellac flakes. It will melt the flakes. It also serves as a carrier in order to apply the finish.
The grain alcohol is not toxic like denatured wood alcohol. Few people may encounter less sensitivity to being exposed to grain alcohol in the place of denatured alcohol. Shellac is non-toxic and hence food safe for utilization of children’s furniture, toys, and various food items. The alcoholic fumes are also not poisonous. Good ventilation is required during application.
GRAS
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) put the food- grade Shellac in the inactive ingredient list. Here, it is classified as Generally Recognize as Safe or GRAS.
